Gallery 24 primarily displays the permanent collection of The Art Institute of Chicago's architecture department. Although the space occupies little more than a long hallway, the gallery receives thousands of visitors each year. To make the gallery more inviting, it was necessary to change its physical environment while retaining the presentation area for visual materials.

A new angled wall transforms the gallery space, changing both its atmosphere and perspective. Lighting underneath the wall establishes an ambient brightness within the space, without affecting the prescribed light level for the displayed models and drawings. Niches appear asymmetrically along the new wall to accommodate display cases of building models. These niches are located where the wall becomes deeper so that they do not overwhelm the adjacent displays of architectural drawings.
