The intersection of Washington Avenue and Fifth Street marks the center of downtown Royal Oak, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. The Fifth, an eighteen-story luxury residential development, is the tallest building in town (and at the time, the tallest to be built in the Detroit area in almost forty years), an instant landmark on the local skyline. With easy access to the restaurants, entertainment venues, and public transportation that have transformed the city’s commercial district into a popular destination, the 205,200-square-foot Fifth required a delicate balance between modern form and amenities and recognition of Royal Oak’s century-old context.
