MP3
Mineral Point, Wisconsin
In Progress
MP3 is an acronym for Mineral Point three. Mineral Point is a small town and rural farming area in southwest Wisconsin. This weekend home's remote, 160-acre site is beautifully rich in old-growth oaks, fruit orchards, trout streams, and rock formations. The home's form echoes agrarian structures in the area. In this new building, the vernacular weathered gray wood siding of the area is referenced with long, thin brick masonry with shades of gray on the exterior and red and brown on the interior. The main living area is defined by extremely high ceilings topped by a skylight system and two parallel glass openings on either side that are 40-feet long and 10-feet high. They evoke barn door openings, while providing viewing portals over the property, centered on the interior by a fire pit. Slate flooring continues to the exterior terraces to emphasize the indoor-outdoor relationship, and any additive volumes within the exposed brick interior are wrapped in micro-perforated end-grain birch plywood for acoustical benefits.
