Thompson House

Thompson Residence

Thompson House

Chicago, Illinois

1994

Built on a 24’x 100’ Chicago lot, the Thompson residence is an exploration of section, light, and material on the tightest of sites and budgets. Fitting into a typical Chicago envelope the interior of the home is replete with a soaring lightwell, a third-floor interior bridge, and a sunken entry. These gymnastics serve to softly illuminate every space of the interior despite the close proximity of sun-blocking neighbors. The exuberance of the interior layout is counterbalanced by the use of readily available off-the-shelf materials. Birch plywood, cement block, and translucent fiberglass are elevated through meticulous detailing and demanding installation standards. The resulting is a bespoke home at one third the average price per square foot.
