The Journey

“The Journey” walks visitors through a narrative spanning from the Great Migration through today. Displayed at the shuttered Anthony Overton Elementary School in Chicago’s South Side Bronzeville neighborhood, the exhibition highlighted the trials and tribulations, as well as the triumphs of African Americans over the last century. Chronicled through an abundance images and texts the installation presents the key role African Americans have played in the development of Chicago as a city and the U.S. as a country, as well as their continued struggle for racial equality. “The Journey” is part of a larger project spearheaded by Creative Grounds to bring awareness and discuss social issues through the activation of shuttered Chicago Public Schools.

Distilled Chicago Icon

The Distilled Chicago Icon scotch container pays homage to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, Bertrand Goldberg’s Marina City Towers. Practical, innovative, and made for Chicago’s middle class, the towers represent the aspirations of Chicago in architectural form. Constructed of translucent injection molded plastic, just enough light passes through the case to reveal the golden glow of the single malt scotch within.

Toronto Winter Stations

Radiating with warmth and humour, this instillation evokes a fishing hut and fish, fall fauna and fire, and a beacon that attracts people to contemplate winter on the lakeshore. The materiality of the structure captivates the eye from afar, and an array of fins plays with the natural light and wind, engaging viewers as they move closer and delivering a serene and palpable sensibility to the moment.

The CNC cut lightweight aluminum fins are painted in four related colors, and simple fasteners attach them to an arrangement of vertical aluminum supports. These supports are then attached to a ring that is held in tension by bars that rest on the seat of the lifeguard chair.

Brininstool + Lynch: Process

The exhibit Brininstool + Lynch: Process examined fifteen years of the firm’s work in drawings, models, photography, and installations of building details at I Space — the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Chicago Gallery of Fine and Applied Arts.

In the exhibition catalogue text written by Reed Kroloff, he remarked: “In a period when theatrics threaten to overwhelm substance in architecture, their work offers a quieter, considered alternative. The ideas trace a clear, logical path, and they mature with each project. Their modernism is not revolutionary, it’s evolutionary. It contains the genetic material of Chicago’s great tradition, and the seeds of its future.”

GSA Design Excellence Exhibit

Brininstool + Lynch was asked to design this important exhibit for the Chicago Architecture Foundation in the lobby of the historically–significant Santa Fe building. The exhibit incorporated models and graphic materials for fifteen innovative federal building projects, commissioned through the U.S. General Services Administration’s Design Excellence Program. The exhibit design reinterprets the atrium’s Doric pilasters with a freestanding colonnade of laser-cut, folded aluminum.
