A full renovation of the former Lincoln Supply Building, the project was a collaboration between the office, Syracuse University School of Architecture, The Syracuse Center of Excellence, UPSTATE, and numerous community consultants and stakeholders. The multi-use building embraces its industrial past while incorporating bright finely detailed spaces. From board form to polished and painted to raw, concrete and steel are deployed in varied surface finishes. Integrated into the design, gray and black-water systems use passive and active technologies to achieve a LEED Platinum rating.

bear_admin Tue, 02/13/2018 - 22:49

Art Institute of Chicago – Gallery 24

Syracuse, New York

2010

SIZE

30,500 square feet

CONTRACTOR

Rich & Gardner Construction

CONSULTANTS

Palucci Engineering, Structural
C&S Companies, Civil, MEP
Earth Sensitive Solutions, Geothermal

AWARDS

2012 AIA Chicago Sustainability Leadership Award – Citation of Merit

PUBLICATIONS

Robbins, Mark. Prominently located on Chicago’s Midway Plaisance across from Rockefeller Chapel, the Forum offers expansive views of Downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan, as well as the University Campus and Woodlawn Community. B+L teamed with design architect, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, to realize this project.

The building is composed of a two-story base and a slender, eight-story tower that provides the University with a 285-seat auditorium and much needed multipurpose meeting spaces for workshops, symposia and lectures, among other activities. The tower is organized as a stack of neighborhoods with meeting and communal spaces offering diverse environments—formal and informal, calm and animated, focused and diffused, scheduled and spontaneous. Each neighborhood coalesces around a central private social lounge that offers a sense of community and identity. The neighborhoods are vertically stacked, each rotated and oriented to their own unique perspective of Chicago, creating a panoramic, 360-degree form, rather than a building with a front and back.

Jacob Wed, 04/11/2018 - 14:02

Guggenheim Helsinki

Chicago, Illinois

2020

SIZE

97,000 square feet

DESIGN ARCHITECT

Diller Scofidio + Renfro

CONTRACTOR

Turner Construction

CONSULTANTS

Primera, MEP, FP, Code, Life Safety, Energy
LERA, Structural
Thornton Tomasetti, Curtain Wall
Site-design, Landscape
Terra Engineering, Civil
Threshold Acoustics, Acoustic, AV, IT
Tillotson Design Associates, Lighting
Syska Hennessy, Vertical Transportation
Cini-little, Food
Hjkessler Associates, LEED
Construction Specifications, Specifications
Dharam Consulting, Cost Estimator
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Waterproofing
Specialty Construction, Interior Steel Stairs Fabrication
Tuschall Engineering, Zinc Rainscreen Fabrication & Installation

AWARDS

2022 IALD Award of Merit
2022 IES Award of Merit
2022 Lerch Bate's People's Choice Award
2022 AIA Chicago Design Excellence Award, Architecture Medium – Honor Award
2022 ACEC NY Engineering Excellence Award – Platinum
2022 CTBUH Award of Excellence – Best Tall Building Under 100 meters
2022 CAGC Project of the Year Award
2021 Interior Design Magazine Best of Year Award, Higher Education
2021 Post-Tensioning Institute Award of Excellence
2021 NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards – Outstanding Finalist
2021 SEAoNY Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards – Finalist
2021 ACI Illinois Chapter Excellence in Concrete Construction Award
2021 Metal Architecture Sustainable Design Award

PUBLICATIONS

Dorris, Jesse. “Diller Scofidio + Renfro Collaborate with Brininstool + Lynch on a LEED Gold-Certified Addition to the University of Chicago,” Interior Design Online, February 1, 2022.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Angie McMonigal

<img src="http://www.brininstool-lynch.com/sites/default/files/styles/selected_work_710x_/public/selected-work/2020-09/15006-PHT-051-LR.jpg?itok=-Od7MlSk" width="710" height="1065" alt="David M. The original building’s limestone base is extended northward to serve as a plinth for a new addition: a pure rectangular volume with a brick core, an intermediate enclosure of glass and metal, and an outer screen of red stone. Public spaces occupy the ground floor, readily accessible to students and visitors. The upper levels accommodate more private functions: seminar rooms on the second floor, the Departments of Economics and Philosophy on the third floor, and suites for visiting scholars on the landscaped rooftop. The transparent ground floor allows visibility into and through the addition. The red-stone screen that wraps the upper floors echoes the brick color and horizontal lines of neighboring buildings, and shades the interior like the shutters and balconies of traditional New Orleans architecture.

BrininstoolLynch Thu, 04/02/2020 - 21:27

Lincoln Building at Syracuse University

New Orleans, Lousiana

2005

SIZE

63,700 square feet

CONSULTANTS

C.E. for this small museum overlooking Lake Michigan. When we undertook the design of the museum in Racine, it was with a thorough understanding of the type of art that would occupy it, the environment required for the art, and the knowledge that our design would need to be a pivotal project in revitalizing a downtown community. Our work involved the complete programming and design for the museum, as well as the first exhibitions. The project is a complete renovation of a composite of several buildings and structures spanning over a century. The design for the new museum redefines the existing structures with contemporary materials and a new spatial composition. The facade is wrapped in translucent acrylic panels separated from the exterior surface, allowing natural light to subtly illuminate the surface of the building during the day, while lighting at the top of the facade causes the building to glow in the evening. The iridescence of the acrylic panels by day and their lantern-like glow by night parallel the qualities of light and movement inside the museum. Recycled materials were used throughout. Limestone taken off the façade of the existing building was re-cut, stored on site, and reused as a new façade material in a different configuration; floors in the museum were made of recycled automobile tires; millwork veneers were made from reconstituted maple.

Since opening in the spring of 2003 the project quickly became a cultural icon and a catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Racine and one of the top-ten cultural attractions in Wisconsin. An inviting glazed ground floor draws the public into the institution to explore the largest contemporary craft collection in North America.

bear_admin Tue, 02/13/2018 - 22:19

Freeport Art Museum

Racine, Wisconsin

2003

SIZE

46,330 square feet

CONTRACTOR

Bukacek Construction

CONSULTANTS

Arnold & O’Sheridan, Structural, MEP
Liska + Associates, Graphics, Wayfinding

AWARDS

2005 AIA Chicago Divine Detail Award – Honor Award
2004 AIA Chicago Sustainable Design Award – Special Recognition for Downtown Revitalization
2003 AIA Chicago Distinguished Building Award – Citation of Merit
2003 AIA Chicago Interior Architecture Award – Honor Award
2002 Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design – American Architecture Award

EXHIBITIONS

“Brininstool + Lynch: Process,” December 10, 2004 – January 29, 2005. Ispace. The Chicago Gallery of the College of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“Road Trip: Racine Art Museum.” Fall 2004. culture. Marking the space between water and land, this design is an implied berth for ships, a connector of vehicular transportation, and a clear public pathway. Evoking a ship's hull, it symbolizes an important civic presence with an inviting nature for public use; as a cathedral, it houses Finnish culture within an envelope of traditional materials that are articulated within a contemporary framework. Long clay bricks in a pronounced pattern are embedded into an array of pre-cast panels to create both a unique geometry for the building skin, as well as an undulating material surface that uniquely evokes a strong Nordic influence, which is mirrored in wood on the interior.

<span lang="" about="http://www.brininstool-lynch.com/user/11" The space’s constrained footprint necessitated a concise design that was still flexible enough to facilitate the department’s extensive permanent collection. To achieve this the space utilizes an angled wall to provide varied display options for models, drawings, and images. The wall is asymmetrically perforated, producing niches for artifacts, while expanses of uninterrupted wall are carefully lit for flat work. Underlighting throughout provides ambient effects without disrupting the prescribed display lighting. The renovation and reimagining of Columbia College Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography will give the already highly-respected institution the public visibility it has long deserved to continue its unique educational mission. Situated within Chicago’s Cultural Corridor along Michigan Avenue, the museum sits adjacent to the Spertus Institute and directly across from Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain, and is a short walking distance from The Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Cultural Center.

The new design acknowledges the museum’s place in the constellation of world-renowned institutions, giving it an instantly recognizable street presence and the ability to better showcase its world-class collection of photographic art. When complete, the MoCP will be a cornerstone of Columbia’s dynamic South Loop campus.

Altered throughout the building’s 100+ years, the current façade obscures the museum and its programming from the public. In the new design, large expanses of glass, framed by terra cotta, acknowledge the historic proportions of the building, while creating a new vitality and street presence on the building’s lower two floors.

Taking advantage of the renovated façade’s transparency, a digital wall facing Michigan Avenue allows for an array of media displays, engaging passersby with still and moving images from the museum’s dynamic collection as well as newly commissioned works by contemporary artists.

Visitors enter a new two-story atrium with an open, modern interior. The lobby features back-lit glass, offset by terrazzo floors and darkened steel panels in the lobby. Entering the first floor of the museum, visitors are drawn into a welcoming pre-gallery space, floating above is a glass and steel cube, where visitors are invited to observe the museum and the accompanying views from a spectacular vantage point, while indicating the scope and size of the museum’s multi floor layout to visitors on the first floor below.

The Second Floor Landing allows for intimate views over Michigan Avenue as well as a moment of repose between galleries, and it leads to the Camera Obscura Gallery which will be one of the few operating camera obscuras worldwide, and the only of its kind in a North American museum.

The second-floor galleries are designed to function as individual spaces with separate identities, while still having the ability to be understood as a contiguous space for larger exhibitions. All the galleries include the latest in exhibition technology.

As an academic art museum, education is central to the museum’s mission. A new Learning Hub is a space for research and instruction.

As a cultural institution, the MoCP’s immeasurable impact stretches far beyond its prominent position on Michigan Avenue. The museum’s reimagined home will be an outward expression of the dedicated community of artists, students, curators, educators, and art lovers that have made the Museum of Contemporary Photography a thriving resource for the art of photography in the city of Chicago and beyond.

<span lang="" about="http://www.brininstool-lynch.com/user/29"
